Harmon — the British firm best known for its Ilford black & white films and printing products — introduced a new/old film in February. Harmon Red 125 is new, in that it’s a new product just shipping now from Harmon. But its also old: it’s a redscale version of the tried and true Harmon Phoenix 200.
Redscaling means the film is loaded backwards. Instead of light hitting the emulsion directly, it has to travel through the reddish backing layer first. This, obviously, gives the resulting photos quite the red tint!
The colors also shift depending on how you expose the film, so I’ve shot the same subjects at three ISOs here: 50, 120 and 200 with my Pentax 17.
It’s an interesting film! It’s…VERY red. But I found it pretty interesting. I think it’s a lot like a fisheye lens: it mostly stays at the bottom of the bag because you don’t need it every day. But in the right situation it’s the perfect tool! Take a look for yourself, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
