Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
With our one motor gone
We can still carry on
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
What a show, what a fight
Boys, we really hit our target for tonight
How we sing as we limp through the air
Look below, there's our field over there
With our one motor gone
We can still carry on
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer

Good stuff. My grandpa was in the 24 ID, in Korea 52-53. He was a radioman/heavy weapons. Bronze star with two oak clusters. Those landing rockets would make slow, juicy targets for any good AA system
Thanks to him and your family for his service. I served in the 24th ID, and in Korea — separately — and I'm old, but not that old; that was before I was born. And yes, my thought is it would be an updated and modified version of the 24th Infantry's Rapid Deployment Force deployment plan, which required a battalion of US Army Rangers to secure that landing zone. Chris, you probably never knew that my late, and much respected and loved, father in law was Jack Gilbert, Doolittle's executive officer of the raiders. Basically, Doolittle was in Washington working the high command and Congress while Jack was in Florida getting the crews and equipment assembled and trained.
I did not know your father-in-law was Doolittle's executive officer! That must be an amazing story-we'd love to hear it!

Don't forget the 2 damaged carriers that were then unavailable for the Indian Ocean raid, Coral Sea, and Midway.
That's a great point, and it's impossible to know how those two damaged carriers might have changed things if they had been available for the battles of the Coral Sea or Midway, which were near things indeed.

My brain is a peculiar place; it likes to play word association, and then play back songs with those words. Here are the songs playing in my mind as I wrote these articles.
