PE Story Updates
An update to 21st Century Luddites-The collapse of college elites:
The pace of college closings has dramatically sped up. About one university or college per week so far this year, on average, has announced that it will close or merge. That’s up from a little more than two a month last year, according to the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association, or SHEEO. So many colleges are folding that some students who moved from one to another have now found that their new school will also close. Fewer than half of the students at colleges that close transfer to other institutions, a SHEEO study found. Of those, fewer than half stay long enough to get degrees. Many lose credits when they move from one school to another and have to spend longer in college, often taking out more loans to pay for it.

Bob Keefer on Ripley, Caravaggio, and Pentax: Relishing the guilty pleasures of film noir, Baroque art, and black and white photography:
Just now reading your article on Pentax Forums. Well done! It's the best and clearest explanation I've seen about what makes monochrome digital cameras not just worthwhile but a head above their color-sensitive siblings in image quality and usability.
Still trying to figure out how I can afford to buy myself a K-3 iii Mono. I didn't know anything about OLED technology before reading your piece. One more thing that's going to make me want to spend money. ;)
It will be interesting to see what this dual technical development does to contemporary BW photography. Will galleries want to invest in OLED screens for their shows? Will the makers of digital printers work out better printing systems to capture all that resolution and tonal variation? These are interesting times.

The New Golden Age of Black and White Photography
Monochrome cameras and OLED screens combine for IQ that rivals the best of large format film
A single frame from a Monochrome sensor exceeds the image quality of Pixel Shift images from color digital cameras at higher ISOs.
We have entered a new Golden Age of Black and White Photography. The extraordinary image quality of monochrome digital sensors can be combined with the enormous dynamic range of newer display technologies such as Organic Light Emitting Diodes; OLED screens offer true blacks and greater dynamic range than was possible with film. The combination delivers image quality that rivals the large format 8x10 cameras and custom wet darkrooms available only to giants such as Ansel Adams.
Easter Eggs
My brain is a peculiar place; it likes to play word association, and then play back songs with those words. Here are the songs playing in my mind as I wrote these articles.
